Lost Not Found

On the porch watching the snow, I remember last summer
and losing my toe ring whilst swimming at my friend’s home.
I was sad as the toe ring was, so I thought, a part of my flesh.
It had been with me so long, I had forgotten to remove it
before diving in the clear waters. I searched and searched,
alas, lost it indeed was. I’ve missed it often since that day,
wondering if someone found it and it’s now on another toe,
that’s not mine, attaching itself to their being, becoming
one with their skin.
